Ontario’s Minimum Wage Goes Up
As a legal matter, the minimum wage is the least amount of money that a boss can properly pay their workers. This is true for most workers who are eligible for the minimum wage. This wage rate will be used no matter if they are paid by the hour, by the piece, or by a flat rate, and it doesn’t matter if they work part-time or full-time.

General:
- Most people who work in Ontario are currently paid at least the general minimum wage.
- For general workers, the minimum pay right now is $16.55 an hour.
- The price will be this way from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024.
This rate used to be $15.50 an hour from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023; $15 an hour from January 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022; and $14.35 an hour from October 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021.
Student:
- This rate is for Ontario student workers who are qualified.
- In Ontario, the minimum pay for students right now is $15.60 an hour.
- It used to be $14.60 an hour for students from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023; $14.10 an hour from January 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022; and $13.50 an hour from October 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021.
- The basic wage for students will stay the same until September 30, 2024.
Servers Of Alcohol:
- In Ontario, the minimum wage for drink servers is the same as the minimum wage for other workers.
- As a result, the current minimum pay for liquor servers will stay in place until September 30, 2024.
- Guides for hunting, fishing, and the wilderness:
- For these jobs, the minimum pay is $82.85 a day for less than 5 hours and $165.75 a day for more than 5 hours.
- They are paid differently than regular people, people who work as booze servers, and students.
- A wilderness guide will often go hiking, learn how to survive in the woods, watch wildlife, dog sledding, back-country skiing and snowshoeing, rock climbing, and other activities.
Workers At Home:
- The minimum pay for people who work from home right now is $18.20 an hour.
- The current minimum wage for people who do their homework will stay in place until September 30, 2024.

Employers can think about giving their workers room and board to make sure they are getting the right minimum wage. This will only be counted as pay if the person has stayed in the room and been fed.
The amount that an employer should pay for this is –
- Rooms cost $31.70 for a single room and $15.85 for a public room.
Meals cost $2.55 for each one, or $53.55 for the whole week. - Rooms and meals (every week): 85.25 dollars for a private room; 69.40 dollars for a non-private room; 53.55 dollars for a non-private room for domestic workers.
- Housing for harvest workers for one week costs 99.35 dollars (for service housing) or 73.30 dollars (for unserviced housing).
When Will The 2024 Minimum Wage Go Up?
Ontario’s minimum wage is linked to the yearly increase in the cost of living. The rate of inflation is used to come up with this yearly indexation. If the minimum wage changes, the new amount will be made public on or before April 1. It won’t start to work, though, until October 1.

In other words, if the government agrees to raise the minimum wage in 2024, it will probably start on October 1, 2024.
